What is an EHIC (EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD)?
The Ehic (European Health Insurance Card) is a card that countries of the EEA or European Economic Area are issuing to replace the E111 form.
The EHIC Card allows the user to receive medical attention when needed, if travelling around Europe (this also includes Switzerland). If you are a resident of the UK you can apply online for you EHIC here. Each person travelling will need their own card.
Who can apply for an EHIC (EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD)?
If you are resident of the UK you are eligible to apply for a EHIC Card (European Health Insurance Card) .There are certain rules that apply depending on your actual nationality.
In order to Apply for a European health insurance card (EHIC/E111) you would need to be a resident of the UK (not including Residents of the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands) and be over 16.
What is the Charge for the EHIC Card?
We charge £34.50 per application which includes 2 adults and up to 10 children. We check that the details of the applicants are correct before processing. You will receive one card per applicant which will be sent via royal mail. Your cards should arrive within 7 days.
How long is a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) Valid For?
The EHIC (formerly E111) Will last for 5 years. Once your EHIC Card has expired you will need to renew your card. You can renew your EHIC Card online Here.
What is the Renewal process for the EHIC Card
You can renew you EHC Card online or by phone. You can renew your EHIC Card up to 6 months prior to your card(s) expiring or any time after your EHIC card has expired. The application process is quick and you should receive your new card within 7-10 working days. You can renew your EHIC Card Here. Can I Still Renew my EHIC Card without my (PIN) Personal Identification Number?
If any of your details have changed since the last time your EHIC card was issued to you, it may not be possible to renew your EHIC card when online as you will require your PIN.

You will be able to renew your EHIC card online, you will need to complete all of the questions on the application, but you do not need to enter your PIN.

If your address has changed then you will be able to renew your EHIC Online.
Please fill in the address fields with your new address and your New EHIC Card(s) will be sent to your new address.
My EHIC card has expired, but my child and/or partners cards have not yet expired.
Can I still renew my card online?
You can still make an application online. Please start by entering details of all the family, weather their cards have expired or not. You will see a warning message for the cards that cannot be renewed.
Why is my card called a E111? Can I still use this?
The E111 has now expired. All E111 cards have been replaced by the EHIC or European Health Insurance Card. You can apply online here

My child is under 16, how do I apply for them?
You will need to make an application in your own name and add your under 16 year old as your dependent child, You will receive a EHIC card each.
I already have an EHIC card, and now have a new addition to the family. How do I add another member of the family?

I have travel insurance; Do I still need an EHIC Card?
Travel Insurance and the EHIC Card work hand in hand with each other. It is advised to have both. Certain insurance companies will ask you to apply for an EHIC card when travelling abroad, if you use your EHIC whilst abroad your insurance company may waive the excess.
